Today’s Featured Listing: SOLD: Highest Priced Sale Breaks Monmouth County Record

RISMEDIA, July 16, 2010—A stunning seaside mansion at the corner of St. Clair and Ocean avenues in Spring Lake, New Jersey has sold for $9.9 million—a record high for a home sale in Monmouth County.

The 20-room house was purchased in 2002 by former Devils owner John McMullen—who died in 2005—and his wife, Jacqueline.

She sold the house on Wednesday to an undisclosed buyer, said real estate broker Diane Turton, owner of Diane Turton Realtors, a 15-office brokerage based in Point Pleasant Beach. Real estate agent Patricia Hamilton in the agency’s Spring Lake office was the buyer’s agent.

Originally priced at $11,999,000, the price beats the previous record for the Monmouth/Ocean Multiple Listing Service—$9.35 million for another Spring Lake home that sold in 2007. The McMullens purchased the house for $8.9 million, according to property records.

For starters, the 100-year-old house has 10 bedrooms and nine bathrooms and two half baths. Renovated in the mid 1990s, its landscaped grounds have a pool, poolhouse and three-car garage with guest quarters above. There’s even a koi pond, a trampoline and a putting green.

The property sits on a little over an acre overlooking the beach. With the way the house is situated, a person on the porch or in the living room doesn’t see Ocean Avenue, just the Atlantic Ocean on the other side.

A Montclair resident, John McMullen, former owner of the Houston Astros, brought big-time professional hockey to New Jersey when he bought the Colorado Rockies and moved the team to New Jersey for the start of the 1982-83 season. He sold his beloved Devils for $175 million in 2000 shortly after New Jersey won its second Stanley Cup.
