RISMEDIA, February 5, 2010—For more than 20 years, Howard Hanna Real Estate Service’s sales associates and employees have been dedicated to helping children, year-after-year, raising money for the Free Care Fund at local Children’s Hospitals.
It is only natural then that in a time of such tragedy in the world, that Howard Hanna Real Estate Services would reach out to the Haitian children and their families affected by the devastating earthquake of January 12th, 2010.
To support the relief efforts in Haiti, Howard Hanna has made a significant contribution on behalf of their sales associates and employees–to the Hospital Albert Schweitzer, one of the closest undamaged hospitals to Port Au Prince, Haiti where the earthquake struck.
The Hospital Albert Schweitzer was able to withstand the earthquake and began treating victims within hours of the tragedy. Trauma teams from around the world are still arriving to assist the hospital staff. As the flow of people seeking care continues, their resources will be pushed to a limit.
“We hope this expression of help and caring in response to this devastating tragedy encourages other businesses to contribute and support the Hospital Albert Schweitzer,” said Helen Hanna Casey, President of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.
Howard Hanna is also bringing a bit of Haiti to Pittsburgh as part of their 2010 Convention and Awards Show, which is being held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, February 23rd and 24th as more than 2,500 of the company’s sales associates will attend the two-day event. Howard Hanna has donated a booth in their “Vendor Village” for Friends of the Hospital Albert Schweitzer to raise awareness of the needs of the hospital. The booth will be filled with information on Haiti, the hospital and information on donating to their programs and relief efforts. “Our sales associates have asking what more they can do to help the hospital,” added Casey. In addition, Haitian art, paintings, crafts, note cards and jewelry will be for sale as an opportunity to donate to the hospital.
Inspired by the work of Albert Schweitzer and his ethic of “reverence for life”, Hospital Albert Schweitzer was founded by the late Americans Dr. Larimer and Gwen Grant Mellon in 1956–about the same time as the Howard Hanna Real Estate company was started in Pittsburgh PA, by Mr. and Mrs. Howard W. Hanna, Jr. in 1957.
Dr. Mellon’s father William Larimer Mellon was the founder of Gulf Oil, and there is a long-standing Pittsburgh connection to the Haiti hospital which has continuously served 300,000 people in a 610 square mile region of the Artibonite Valley of Haiti for the past half century.
Howard Hanna Real Estate Services encourages other businesses to contribute to support the Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti as they have been a part of our regional and global community as a sustaining partner of the Haitian community for over 50 years.
