Staying Focused at Work in the Middle of a Pandemic

Even as 15 states pause reopening efforts and six other states actively reverse those plans, more and more people are returning to their offices. It likely has many real estate professionals asking themselves: How do I focus while at my office?

Luckily, real estate is one industry where many are able to avoid being in the office for stretches during the week, but many will still start spending at least some time at their company’s physical locations. Here are several things you can do to help yourself stay focused on your job if you’re expected to be in your office on Monday:

Take a break from the news. Although it is important to be informed on the situation with COVID-19 in the U.S., and especially in your local area, it’s important to not become addicted to the news. Try your best to avoid constantly checking in as this can be poisonous to your mindset and incredibly distracting. If you must, set a time during the day that you can spend 5 or 10 minutes looking up pandemic-related news.

Re-establish your routine. One of the things that you probably got used to while working from home was establishing a new routine. Humans are incredibly adept at adapting to new life circumstances, and this is a good thing as you’re going to have to turn back around and re-establish your office routine. Be sure to use a calendar, make lists of tasks you need to accomplish and stay organized!

Understand what you can and cannot control. Having the wisdom to understand the things that are out of your control right now is crucial to maintaining your mental health. You can’t control what is reported in the news, but your world—your relationships with other people and the plans you choose to make with them—are still very much within your own control. Be mindful of your own fears and anxieties, including those regarding your workplace, and don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor if you can work from home if you feel like you’re becoming overwhelmed.

Agents, if you’re no longer working from home, what other strategies are you utilizing in order to stay focused?
