How to Design a Home That Embraces Nature

Being constantly surrounded by all sorts of technology can be stressful and make it difficult to unwind at the end of the day. Homes that feel connected to the outside world, however, are often more relaxing and tranquil. If this sounds familiar, here are several ways to create a living environment that embraces nature.

Outdoor Living Area
The best way to enjoy the natural world is to simply immerse yourself in it. For this reason, some homes are designed with several outdoor spaces that can be used at different times over the course of the day, such as a place to drink your coffee in the morning light and a separate seating area where you can watch the sun go down in the evening. You can also have a covered space, like a porch or loggia, that can be used when it’s raining.

Focus on Landscaping
Don’t underestimate the power of thoughtful landscaping. Whether you’re sitting inside or out, this can bring nature to the forefront throughout your home. Mature trees and lush gardens can be strategically placed to provide scenic vistas from each room and will change with the seasons.

Capture Views
It’s important to make sure that the interior of your home is designed to take advantage of the surrounding views. Oversized windows and glass doors are essential for bringing the outdoors in, but you should also focus on how your furniture is arranged. Try to create seating areas that benefit from the best viewpoints in your home and remove any obstructions, like large pieces of decor, that may be a visual distraction.

Bring Nature Inside
Indoor trees and houseplants can easily be incorporated into your design aesthetic and provide a natural element that’s both stylish and relaxing. Additionally, textures like stone, wood and natural fibers are commonly used to make a home feel more connected to its surroundings, especially when locally sourced.
