Monday Morning Mobile: Small Businesses Still Haven’t ‘GoMo’ed’

Home Best Practices

How important is mobile? Important enough that it is literally changing the world daily; the way we interact, communicate, get our news and complete daily tasks such as banking or looking for a home.

Smartphones have become the tool of choice; I can say this definitively because my father now owns one and if he has one it means it is officially mainstream. So if the tool that allows us to access more information than ever before is now mainstream how come business aren’t catching up and formatting their content to be viewed on our favorite device?

A recent survey by AT&T revealed that while 75 percent of small businesses reported having a website, only 31 percent said they had a mobile enabled website. Yet the same study also noted that 60 percent reported that they would spend more on online marketing this year than last and noted that location based searching was becoming more and more important. The fact is, while we all notice how much location based “local” searches have improved our day to day, many of us have not stopped to think about why that’s possible.

It’s only possible through our mobile devices. Our desktops lack the location services needed to determine the results based on where we are. In addition, the combination of the phone/internet allows for immediate connections to be made through click-to-call once we have found something of interest.

The real estate business is an inherently mobile business. People get in the car and physically go to the area they are interested in moving to in many cases. Why wouldn’t we as business owners, those marketing the homes for sale, cater to the consumers on their device of choice; their mobile device?

In fact many have. They are seen as the “early adopters.” The fact is, mobile is no longer the future as it was in 2010, it is the present. We can no longer operate without thinking about the way in which we are providing our content to those using mobile devices to access our website. The access of information by mobile users is only going to increase and therefore we need to start presenting for all devices now.
